Half terms can be tricky – the weather is often lousy, but a week is not long enough to warrant travelling very far. Yet here at Luxury Family Hotels, we love autumn half terms more than almost any other time of year – there’s plenty to do at attractions all over the UK in the form of Halloween activities, the landscapes can be stunning as the leaves fall from the trees, and if you choose wisely, there’s lots to do at your hotel should the weather let you down. We’ve shared our recommendations for having a brilliant half-term break.

Our Dorset GM Neil recently celebrated his 20 years at the hotel at a surprise party thrown by his loyal staff. We asked him to look back over this career at Moonfleet as well as share his plans for the hotel with us.
Here at Luxury Family Hotels, we love our food. Come to any of our hotels and you can count on delicious, healthy cuisine based where possible on the freshest local produce, whether designed with foodie adults or picky kids in mind.
We also know the importance of getting children involved in what they eat – at some of our hotels, they can help out in the kitchen garden and collect eggs for breakfast.
We’ve shared our favourite books for both cooking for and cooking with kids – useful as everyday reference books but also great Christmas presents or birthday gifts for that food-lover in your life.
With the spooky season nearly upon us, we’ve rounded up our top recommendations for 2017 Halloween events handy for our Fowey Hall and Polurrian Bay hotels in Cornwall. See also our blog on celebrating Halloween at our hotels, with seasonal crafts and activities.
Autumn is one of our favourite times of year at Luxury Family Hotels – perfect for crisp walks, leaf stomping and conker gathering, and of course for all the fiendish fun of Halloween…
Staff from our OFSTED-registered ‘dens’ lay on a creepy selection of very special seasonal activities for our younger guests and for families, including the likes of witchy scarecrow making, ferocious face painting, perfect pumpkin carving, marshmallow toasting, scary mask-making, gingerbread skeleton cooking, cress-head mummy-making, haunted nature trails, apple-bobbing, lantern-making and Bonfire Night crafts. We’d love to see you and your family at in the one of our family-friendly hotels, but in the meantime, we’ve shared Woolley Grange's recipe for a nightmarishly good ice scream sundae.
As the days grow shorter and the temperature falls, outdoor play becomes less and less enticing – not least for parents, who tend to feel the cold more because they’re often not running around. In fact, children are usually just as happy larking around in the wind, rain and snow as they are in the sunshine, not least when there’s some conker-hunting, puddle-jumping or snowball-fighting to be done.
We’ve rounded up the best outdoor games to battle cabin fever with children of various ages during the chillier months – ones so fun that hopefully you’ll be tempted to join in too (if not, then go prepared for the cold, with hand-warmers to slip into your gloves and a flask of coffee or hot chocolate…).
Most of the following are suitable for the garden or the park; some require snow…
With Britain’s hedgerows now bursting with wild blackberries, lots of us have been out and about filling tubs and colanders with this juicy, versatile fruit. One of the easiest ways of enjoying foraging with kids, it’s a great – and free! – summer holiday activity.
What isn’t eaten directly from the bush can be brought home to make into a whole array of delicious dishes and drinks. If you don’t use the fruits right away, store them, unwashed, on sheets of kitchen paper in the fridge to avoid crushing.
We’ve shared our favourite recipes with you – most of them easy enough to make with kids, or even to let the kids create themselves with a little supervision. And if you’re heading for our Woolley Grange Hotel in Wiltshire, don’t miss our home-made blackberry gin using own-grown fruits!
Our Wiltshire and Cornwall hotels are great places to head this September and October for foodies keen to join in with one of the UK’s longest-standing traditions and celebrate local produce in unique ways.
An explosion in the number of outdoor film screenings this year means there’s plenty to choose from wherever you live or take a family break in the UK this summer and beyond. We’ve listed our family favourites within easy reach of our Luxury Family Hotels.
At Luxury Family Hotels, we’re all about quality family time together – which is why we’re delighted to announce the introduction of our Digital Detox Boxes, whereby guests can ditch their devices in exchange for a wicker hamper packed with family fun to enjoy during their stay.
