We can’t be on holiday all of the time, and when we are at home there will always be times when we feel short of inspiration on things to do with the kids – especially when the weather lets us down and they’re angling for some extra screen-time. But with a little imagination, there are plenty of things to keep all the family happy and busy – and many of them are inexpensive or even free. The following are some of our favourites.

Most of us love a good family-friendly festival, but there’s no denying that camping, late nights and all that hedonism can take it out on you. Happily, with several Luxury Family Hotels within easy reach of some of the UK's biggest festivals this summer, you can check yourselves in for a day or two of luxury – think a steaming hot bath, crisp cotton sheets, fluffy towels, freshly prepared food and a well-deserved, very comfortable bed!
Here at Luxury Family Hotels, we love a good picnic and are always happy to whip up take-out lunches for our guests on request – see our blog on the best picnic sites handy for our properties.
If you’re making your own picnic this summer, our top tips are to keep it relatively simple and to get the kids involved in the planning and preparation. And avoid anything too messy or perhaps anything that needs plates – hand-held and portable should be your watchwords here!
The grounds at our child-friendly hotel near Bath are just made for enjoying those long, lazy summer days as a family and for letting the kids make the very most of the great outdoors and play with new friends as you chill out on the terrace over a cocktail or glass of champagne. Here are some of our favourite things to do outdoors at Woolley Grange after you’ve checked in your gadgets in our Digital Detox box!
We’re delighted to team up with Bushbaby Travel to offer a voucher for £350 off a stay at one of our child-friendly properties when you spend £5000 or more on one of their family adventure holidays in South Africa, Mauritius or Thailand – holidays designed by parents for parents.
There’s nothing like a crab sandwich and/or a cream tea overlooking the shimmering sand to get you well and truly into the summer holiday spirit. As the sun finally shows its face, we share our favourite beach cafés handy for our seaside hotels in Cornwall and Dorset – all of them, naturally, very family friendly.
Ask Dad what he wants for Father’s Day (18th June) this year, and the answer will probably be very simple – a long lie-in and the chance to read the papers over a cup of tea. This is where Luxury Family Hotels come in – our Sunday lie-in service means dads (and partners!) can chill out under the duvet while our lovely nannies entertain the kids, before you all grab some quality family time.
You may well choose to have a leisurely lunch in one of our child-friendly restaurants or a cream tea, then walk or cycle it all off around our grand estates or in one of our swimming pools. Or you could book Dad a treatment in one of our wonderful spas. But if you fancy a great day out, there are also some brilliant attractions and activities within easy reach of our hotels – places that Dad will enjoy but that have something for all the family. We’ve rounded up our favourites.
With the arrival of new head chef Jamie Holmes and new food and beverage manager Tom Perriman at our family-friendly hotel in the New Forest, it was time for a revamp of the children’s menu. General manager Lauren McCann tells us more.
Our property on the Lizard Peninsula takes its commitment to the local landscape very seriously, and this of course includes our very own Polurrian Beach (Mullion). Once a month, we support the Friends of Polurrian Beach's cleans by taking responsibility for the disposal and transport of the litter collected, and by provided refreshments and cakes for its volunteers and any other helpers, including our own guests.
