Great Ideas for Getting the Kids Outdoors
Part of Luxury Family Hotels’ ethos has always been to encourage our younger visitors (and their grown-ups!) to get up close and personal with nature. We’ve looked at some of the best ways of inspiring kids to get outdoors, whatever the weather.
Get growing. Visit Woolley Grange’s wonderful herb garden or one of our hotel kitchen gardens and let you and your family be inspired to plant your own produce – perhaps to use in your cooking.
Get a pet. Dogs are a wonderful way of getting you out and about in all weather, and you can bring them on holiday with you too – see our Top Tips for Travelling with Dogs. If you don’t have a pet and aren’t sure you want to commit to one, try being a short-term foster carer to a dog or cat for around 12 weeks. Or come to a Luxury Family Hotel – we have plenty of pets of our own!
Get on your bike. Visit sustrans.org.uk or goskyride.com for inspiration on routes, some of them traffic-free. Some of our properties also have bike loan or hire – at the Ickworth, for instance, you can go out exploring the surrounding National Trust estate on two wheels.
Get muddy. Obstacle course races are getting ever-more popular, with Tough Mudder and Mini Mudder the best known.
Go on a Parkrun. These relaxed 5km events for all the family are held weekly in a variety of locations around the country.
Visit a country estate. National Trust properties are reliable bets for family days out, with something new to see and do every season.
Attract wildlife to your garden. Mix room-temperature lard with bird-seed, oats and dried fruit and shape into balls with string threaded through, then set in the fridge before hanging outside for the birds. Or create a hedgehog shelter in early summer, when babies are born – make an entry hole in a medium-sized cardboard box, line it with straw and newspaper, and place it close to a fence or hedge, covering with a bin-bag.
Go stargazing. Wrap up warm, pack a flask of hot chocolate, and find a spot far from streetlights to see up to 4,000 stars on a clear night.
Eat alfresco. See our blog on the top picnic spots handy for our family-friendly hotels.
