Our favourite coast and country walks

‘Tis the season to embrace the elements. Feel the leaves crunching under foot as you blow the cobwebs away and explore somewhere new. We’ve put together our pick of the best local walks, all just a stone’s throw from our coast and countryside locations.

Gribbin Head from Fowey Hall Hotel

At Luxury Family Hotels, we’re proud supporters of the South West Coast Path and have a route on Fowey Hall’s doorstep which is home to the sandy coves, ancient castles and eye-catching daymarkers which Cornwall is well-known for.

From the hotel, turn right onto Hansen Drive and follow the signs for Readymoney Cove, a sandy beach sheltered by cliffs, close to the mouth of the river. From here, turn right onto Readymoney Road and continue onto the South West Coast Path where you can easily follow the acorn along this stunning coastal route.

Venture 2.5 miles along, making sure to detour slightly for an adventure around St. Catherine’s Castle, before reaching the hidden treasure that is Polridmouth Cove, accessible only by foot or boat. From here, you can turn back or continue for another half a mile with a slight ascent up to Gribbin Head, a historic daymarker with stunning views out to sea.

Langton Harring from Moonfleet Manor Hotel

Accessed from the very bottom of our garden, this coast path walk promises exceptional views of the surrounding countryside, Chesil Beach and Fleet lagoon as you venture through woodland, downland and freshwater margins.

From the hotel gardens, turn right to follow the coastal path, following the route as it weaves along the coast around Herbury Point to the Coast Guard Cottages. From here, walk up a dirt track into Langton Herring, where you can enjoy a well-deserved break before heading back to Moonfleet for a night of relaxation.

All-Terrain buggy’s are available from the Four Bears’ Den making this walk suitable for young families.

Two Valleys Walk from Woolley Grange Hotel

Starting at the local village of Freshford, this 3.5 mile circular is a picturesque country walk along the River Avon, with views of Ilford Manor (and the option to explore it’s Italianate Gardens), the canal and Friary Wood.

Looking for a longer walk? Set off from Woolley Grange, following the Bradford on Avon route down to the canal before joining at Avoncliff to complete the rest of this scenic circular stroll.

Brockenhurst Village from New Park Manor

Located in the New Forest, New Park Manor has no shortage of woodland walks ready and waiting to be explored. Our pick takes you through the forest to the nearby village of Brockenhurst where there are plenty of coffee shops and local eateries.

Head into the forest from our hotel, walking straight past the Polo fields before veering left at the metal gate, turning left at the first T-junction and right at the second, where you’ll cross the river and see a divided path. From here, follow the main path to the right into Brockenhurst until you reach a tarmacked road, which you need to follow to the left, passing the Forest Park Hotel and crossing the bridge onto the high street.

Walled Garden and Canal from Ickworth Hotel

Adventures are endless at The Ickworth with a 9 mile multi-trail track around the estate with vistas, woodland and countryside all around. Our pick is this circular walk around the Walled Garden and Canal lake which is a wildlife lovers heaven, boasting views of St. Mary’s Church, the Rotunda and the wider Ickworth estate.

Upon leaving the hotel, continue straight, passing Parson’s Pond on the right before bearing right passed the Walled Garden with views across the Linnet Valley. Follow the grassy path along to the river to the Canal lake, passing through a gate to enter the gardens where you can sit and take in the view before continuing this relaxing National Trust trail.
